Honors for two top Democrats

Wilton Democrats Saturday honored two of their Party’s—and the town’s—most longstanding contributors, Virginia Benin and Richard Creeth, and heard the honorees remind them to work “across the aisle” to be effective. At the same time State Comptroller Kevin Lembo urged them to stay the fight for Democratic values, saying every misguided cut in the budget is “a cut to the moral fibre of the state.” In an otherwise sobering report on the harm “fake news” has inflicted on political discourse, Fairfield University associate professor Jocelyn Boryczka joined Lembo in citing increased involvement by concerned Democrats as the bright side of a troubled political scene.

Benin received the Democratic Town Committee’s Lifetime Achievement Award. She has served in elected, appointed and voluntary posts for four decades, including as chair of the Board of Education. Creeth, a native of England and four-term Selectmen who now sits on the Board of Finance, was honored as Democrat of the Year. He told the bi-partisan breakfast crowd of 100 that working across party lines was critical. “My friends in England ask my why I love this country,” said Creeth. “I tell them it’s because you really see things getting done here.”
