DEMYSTIFYING THE CAMPAIGN TRAIL

DAY WITHOUT A WOMAN STRIKE ON INTERNATIONAL WOMAN’S DAY MARCH 8TH

Anyone, anywhere can join by making March 8th A Day without a Woman, in one or all of the following ways:

1. Women take the day off, from paid and unpaid labor.
2. Avoid shopping for one day (with the exceptions for small, women- and minority-owned businesses).
3. Wear RED in solidarity with A Day without a Woman.

WOMEN’S DAY AT THE CAPITOL

Celebrate Women’s Day at the Capitol with a discussion on intersectional feminism and a discussion on the ways different oppression’s intersect, like gender, race, class, sexual orientation and ability. This event is organized by the Connecticut Commission on Women, Children and SeniorsFor more information, click here.

A CONVERSATION WITH YOUR MUSLIM NEIGHBORS

This panel will attempt to dispel or subvert stereotypical notions of what and who your Muslim American neighbor is. It will give the community an opportunity to have a conversation with their Muslim neighbors who are pillars of their immediate communities. The panelists are Dolores Durrani, co-founder Saffron Road Foods, Westport; Azra Assaduddin, community activist, member, Interfaith Council of Norwalk; Zeeshaan Fatema Aratsu, history teacher, New Canaan High School; and Ameena Meer, author, brand manager, Sufi, Brooklyn, NY.

The panel will be moderated by Darien author and professor Sharbari Zohra Ahmed. All are welcome to this free community event. 

GIRLS DAY AT THE CAPITOL

Girls Day at the Capitol is a forum for young women in grades 8-12 to explore the stories of the Connecticut women who fought to secure their right to vote, hear from high-level women in government, discuss the issues most important to them, and learn about the legislative process and how they can use their own voices to address 21st-century challenges. This event is organized by Connecticut Women’s Hall of Fame.  For more information, click here.

Today 14% of Connecticut residents are foreign-born, amounting to over 500,000 people whose legal status ranges from permanent resident to undocumented. Connecticut is a likely target of the Trump administration’s efforts to punish states with Sanctuary Cities and other pro-immigrant policies. Senator Leone will update us on action at the state level, including impacts on local law enforcement and students who now qualify as DREAMERS. 

DAUGHTER AND MOTHER CAMP CONGRESS FOR GIRLS DC II 2017

Daughter and Mother Camp Congress for Girls DC II 2017 is a leadership program that introduces girls ages 8 to 15 and their moms (or dads) to politics. Camp begins with a girl-friendly lesson on the structure of our political system. Each girl will choose to run for a seat in the US House of Representatives, the US Senate or for the presidency. Each mom will serve as her daughter’s campaign manager. For more information, click here.

 This is organized by Girls in Politics Initiative, which is part of the Political Institution for Women and introduces girls ages 8 to 15 to politics, policy, the United States Congress, parliaments and the work of the United Nations.
