Mark your calendar for the Annual Town Meeting (ATM) on Tuesday, May 7, at 7:30 p.m. at the Clune Center at Wilton High School. The likely adjourned vote will be Saturday, May 11.

For those who are not familiar with the process:

The Board of Finance holds separate hearings on the Board of Education and Board of Selectmen budgets. Current numbers mean a mill rate increase of 2.56% to 28.9102.

At the selectmen’s meeting on April 1, both the finance board and selectmen will be present for a joint discussion of the possible financial implications of proposed legislative bills in Hartford. After which, the selectmen and school board will discuss the school board’s bonded projects requests.

This meeting is open to the public and will take place at 7:30 p.m. in Room B at Wilton Town Hall, and available live and later on channel 79 and on the town’s website the next day.

On Tuesday, April 2, and Wednesday, April 3, the finance board will meet at 7:30 p.m. in Room B at Wilton Town Hall to decide the selectmen’s and education budget amounts and what mill rate to recommend to the Annual Town Meeting. These meetings are open to the public and available live and later on channel 79 and the next day on the town’s website.

On Monday, April 15, the selectmen will approve bonding referendums to be brought to the ATM. This meeting is open to the public (Room B in Wilton Town Hall) and available live on channel 79 and later and the next day on the town’s website.

At the ATM, budgets and referenda will be presented. Motions can be made from the floor to reduce the Board of Selectmen’s budget and/or the Board of Education’s budget. This meeting is not broadcast live, as you have to be there in the room to participate. The next day, it is available on channel 79 and the town’s website

The adjourned budget vote will be held either immediately following the ATM on May 7 or on Saturday, May 11, at the Clune Center. Voting hours will likely be from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. The selectmen will decide this issue on April 1.

The deadline for filing for an appeal hearing for your assessment was March 20. If you didn’t file, your assessment is final. If you forget what it is, you can look it up on the assessor’s page of the town website.

To calculate your estimated FY2020 property taxes based on the finance board’s current projected mill rate, multiply your assessment by 28.9102 and divide by 1,000.
